Q: Four steps to rejuvenating and caring for your skin

A:  Recommended steps to rejuvenating and caring for your skin

1. Gentle Exfoliation:
Use of gentle exfoliation is best for the skin.  Skintelligence facial firming masque exfoliates without scrubbing or abrasives that could scratch skin and/or lodge into the pores and cause clogging and breakouts.  Also, chemical exfoliants: such as salicylic acid at 2%, Kerotolytic Agents, and enzyme peels from green papaya are effective in dissolving excess build-up of dead skin cells.
2. Massage:
Studies indicate that stress may be a factor in causing disease, as well as skin related disorders (i.e. psoriases and eczema), headaches, digestive disorders, high blood pressure, poor eyesight and depression.  Facial massage is a therapeutic way to relax and tone facial muscles and release stress from the face which causes wrinkles, lines and crows feet. To achieve a therapeutic effect, knowledge of the facial muscles is required.
3. Hydration
The Stratum Corneum needs moisture to be flexible, firm, translucent and work well as a barrier. Therefore, it is important to avoid soaps and to restore the NMF (Normal Moisturizing Factor). NMF is a water soluble mix of natural chemicals that hold onto water in healthy skin. These chemicals include Amino Acids, PCA, glucose, fructose, urea, lactate, citrate formulate and inorganic salts.  I found tha Spirulina and Laminaria Digitata sea plants are nature's best source of Marine Moisturizing Factors or MMFs that actually mimic the skin's NMFs.  These can be found in my Skintelligence and Timeless Prescription skin care lines.
4. Protection:
Increase the skin barrier with Linoleic Acid and Gamma Linoleic Acid, Antioxidants, Polyphenols and Vitamins. I recommend using a foundation  or a skin care cream that contains sun protection on a daily basis such as our Custom-Blended Foundation or my Vitashield Moisturizer.  You can also use my Sunscreen additive with any of my other skin care moisturizers.

Q: Top 10 Do's and Don'ts for looking Younger
A:   Looking younger is about taking better care of yourself on a daily basis.

1. Wear protective clothing.

2. Apply sun protection with SPF and Anti-Oxidants such as green tea, white tea and red tea. Thermus Thermophilus substance helps to protect the skin from heat damage.

3. Rejuvenation facials like the 4-Layer Facial at least once a month.

4.
Take a nightly bath; don't go to bed without soaking 15 minutes in a seaweed bath. Relax.

5. Take Spirulina daily.

6. Exercise daily. Include calisthenics and yoga. Breathe deeply.

7. Cleanse and tone the skin twice daily.

8. Always use a moisturizer and a nourishing cream.

9. Sleeping with a silk eye mask relaxes your eye area and prevents you from frowning in your sleep.

10. Use daily nourishing cream all over your body. Don't forget skin doesn't stop at your neck.

1. Don't go to a sun tanning salon. It will cause skin cancer and premature aging.

2. Don't smoke--it not only stresses the body, it stresses the skin and causes premature aging.  Not to mention that it can kill you.

3. Stay away from the sun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

4.  Avoid stressful situations. Proper prior-planning prevents stress.

5. Don't eat junk food.

6. Avoid processed foods with high content of nitrates, sugars and sodium.

7. Don't eat fried foods.

8. Don't use soaps, avoid Benzoyl Peroxide, hydrogen and Retinoic Acid and Glycolic Acid (reduces the protective barrier of the skin).

9. Don't pick and scratch at your skin. It removes a barrier and may cause skin infections.

10. Don't overdo. Remember less is always more.

Younger-looking skin, at a cost

Even non-surgical cosmetic therapy has risks.

Botox, chemical peels and more are offered now.

A generation ago, people who wished to look younger relied primarily upon cosmetic surgery, such as face-lifts. Today we have far more options, including Botox, chemical peels, dermabrasion and collagen injections. These treatments are widely available, so it's wise for those seeking these services to be armed with good information.

For starters, know where wrinkles come from. As we age, the elasticity of our skin changes. The protein structures become less supportive, the skin dries out more easily, and wrinkles occur as a result. All this is accelerated by cigarettes and sunlight, so smoking and sunbathing are verboten for those who want healthy and wrinkle-free skin.

In addition, talking, laughing, yawning, squinting and frowning all cause wrinkling over time. And, as with other parts of the body, Earth's gravity "tugs" the skin toward the ground, leading to loose, saggy jowls and droopy eyelids.

Of course, not all wrinkling calls for the same therapy, and not everyone who offers the services is the same. Before you proceed with any non-surgical cosmetic therapy, discuss the basics with your physician and let her point you in the direction of someone reputable. The American Academy of Dermatology (aad.org) also has good information.

Finally, remember that even these non-surgical procedures involve some risk, and they are expensive and temporary. In the long run, your best bet is to have healthy skin habits.

Q: How should People with Acne care for their skin?
A:

How Should People With Acne Care for Their Skin?

Clean Skin Gently

If you have acne, you should gently wash your face with a mild cleanser, once in the morning and once in the evening, as well as after heavy exercise. Wash your face from under the jaw to the hairline and be sure to thoroughly rinse your skin.

Ask your doctor or another health professional for advice on the best type of cleanser to use.

Using strong soaps or rough scrub pads is not helpful and can actually make the problem worse. Astringents are not recommended unless the skin is very oily, and then they should be used only on oily spots.

It is also important to shampoo your hair regularly. If you have oily hair, you may want to wash it every day.

Avoid Frequent Handling of the Skin

Avoid rubbing and touching skin lesions. Squeezing, pinching or picking blemishes can lead to the development of scars or dark blotches.

Shave Carefully

Men who shave and who have acne should test both electric and safety razors to see which is more comfortable. When using a safety razor, make sure the blade is sharp and soften your beard thoroughly with soap and water before applying shaving cream. Shave gently and only when necessary to reduce the risk of nicking blemishes.

Avoid a Sunburn or Suntan

Many of the medicines used to treat acne can make you more prone to sunburn. A sunburn that reddens the skin or suntan that darkens the skin may make blemishes less visible and make the skin feel drier. However, these benefits are only temporary, and there are known risks of excessive sun exposure, such as more rapid skin aging and a risk of developing skin cancer.

Choose Cosmetics Carefully

While undergoing acne treatment, you may need to change some of the cosmetics you use. All cosmetics, such as foundation, blush, eye shadow, moisturizers, and hair-care products should be oil free. Choose products labeled noncomedogenic (meaning they don't promote the formation of closed pores). In some people, however, even these products may make acne worse.

For the first few weeks of treatment, applying foundation evenly may be difficult because the skin may be red or scaly, particularly with the use of topical tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide.

We've all heard how important it is to care for our skin from the outside--but what's often not recognized is just how much our lifestyle affects the appearance of our skin, particularly when it comes to acne. Yes, cleansing regularly, applying the right treatment products and developing better skin habits (e.g., avoiding picking at all costs) will help keep your complexion clear, but it's only when you target skin from both the outside and the inside that you'll begin to see longer-lasting results. Eating the right foods, exercising consistently and making time for daily stress relief are just a few of the good-for-you habits beneficial for your skin, but there are others. Here, what you need to do now to improve the appearance of your skin and, in the process, your overall health.
